Introduction
New Zealand butter has a global reputation for its buttery taste and deeper yellow color. This is due to the New Zealand dairy farming being pasture-based, a somewhat unique fact in global dairy where most dairy cows are confined for considerable parts of the year and fed commodities and supplements. As a result of their significant pasture-fed diet, the butter produced from New Zealand dairy cow milk is high in beta carotene a natural compound that is converted by the human body into vitamin A.

New Zealand first began exporting butter in 1882 when the ship 'Dunedin', carried the nation's first export of refrigerated butter and lamb, 12,000 miles to London. Since then the country has become the world's largest exporter of butter and lamb.
