Introduction
New Zealand has been exporting Lamb meat since 1882. Today it is the world's largest exporter of lamb, which is easy to explain when one is told that the country has one of the best temperate and subtropical grass growing pastures in the world and has 26 million sheep compared to its human population of 5 million! Lamb exports first occurred when the sailing ship 'Dunedin' which was equipped with an onboard refrigeration unit, took a shipment of New Zealand lamb and butter on a 12,000-mile journey to England. The venture was highly successful with only 1 of the 5,000 carcasses onboard being condemned upon arrival. The quality and taste of the New Zealand lamb were well received by the British consumer resulting in a profit of £4700 or USD806,945 in 2022 values for the farming company that organized the shipment. Today New Zealand lamb is widely sought after around the world because of its supreme natural qualities. For example, it is the highest Omega Lamb in the world, largely due to the fact that its diet is 100% pasture-based. It is also GMO-free and artificial hormone-free, thanks to the New Zealand ban on such technologies.
The bottom line is New Zealand Lamb is the best and most sought after in the world- and it all began 140 years ago!
